Akha Ama is an innovative coffee producer from the mountain village Mae Jantai in the northern Thai province of Chiang Rai.
Although only recently on the market Akha Ama produces already outstanding high quality coffee. This is due to several factors: First, there are the used Arabica coffee varieties Typica and Catuia which are not as productive as other varieties but come up with a extraordinarily flavor. In addition, the coffee plants are grown in mixed culture in order to avoid pests that are otherwise common in mono culture. The coffee trees are also shaded by other trees like in a natural forest. The moist and cool mountain air in Mae Jantai is another factor that influences the quality positive.
Originally, only a single family produced beans for of Akha Ama Coffee. But, with increasing demand for Akha Ama coffee now 17 families can live on coffee cultivation. The unique success story was also picked up by the international press. Among others, the Wall Street Journal, the Bangkok Post and the current Journal of the Swiss-Asian Chamber of Commerce (Edition 01/2013, starting page 40).
