This is a Assam black tea from Doi Mae Salong. The tea plants from which the tea leaves were picked grow on former opium fields which once made the golden triangle infamous. In addition to Assam, some tea cultivars from Taiwan and even from Japan are now being cultivated and processed into various teas.

The tea leaves are still harvested by hand in Thailand. This is partly due to the steep topography, which does not allow heavy machinery, but also due to the cheap labor in the more rural north. Since the tea harvest takes place in the spring before the monsoon, it is an ideal supplement for the rice farmers who can only harvest their rice fields after the monsoon.

Harvest time: 2019
