What is a Gaiwan?

A Gaiwan, also known as a traditional Chinese tea cup, is an essential element of Chinese tea culture, used for brewing and enjoying tea. This classic tea accessory, whose name means ‘lid bowl’, consists of three parts: the bowl, the lid, and the saucer.

The Gaiwan’s origin dates back to the Ming Dynasty. Its popularity is due to its flexible usability and elegant design. While often made from porcelain, Gaiwans are also available in glass, ceramic, or precious stone variants. Porcelain is particularly popular due to its ability to retain heat and bring out the tea’s flavors.

The Gaiwan is used through a simple but effective technique: tea leaves are placed in the bowl, hot water is poured over them, and the lid covers the leaves during steeping. When pouring the tea, the lid serves as a strainer, holding back the leaves. This utensil is especially suitable for high-quality, loose tea varieties such as Oolong, green tea, or white tea. It allows the tea connoisseur to fully experience the aroma and quality of the tea with each infusion. Additionally, it is ideal for Gongfu tea ceremonies and multiple infusions.
